Amerisleep vs. Saatva Mattress Reviews

Mattress Comparison
Read Time: 11 minutes

There are more mattresses on the market today than ever before, which is why reading mattress comparisons is so important. Whether you’re going store to store, or trying to find the best mattress in a box, each company uses its own technology, philosophy, and values to create unique sleep products. An in-depth Saatva mattress review compared with an equal look at Amerisleep will give you an idea of each brand’s strengths and weaknesses.

As we compare Amerisleep and Saatva, you’ll see how company values are reflected in their products and policies, which can make all the difference for you. During this article, we talk about two common factors that affect comfort—weight and sleep style. For the purpose of this comparison, we’ll break weight into three categories:

  • Lightweight = under 130 pounds
  • Average weight = 130 to 230 pounds
  • Heavyweight = over 230 pounds

You move through several sleep styles or sleeping positions throughout the night. However, each person usually has one position they prefer. Sleep style determines how much support and conforming you need. We’ll be talking about the three most basic positions—stomach, back, and side.

In general, stomach sleepers need more support to prevent overarching of the back. The best mattress for side sleepers requires excellent conforming and pressure relief through the shoulders and hips, while still maintaining solid spinal support. Back sleepers stay in a fairly neutral posture all night and are generally comfortable on a wide variety of mattresses.

Amerisleep Mattresses

amerisleep mattressesAmerisleep entered the mattress market in 2007. Their patented technologies make their mattresses cool, conforming, and comfortable for a wide range of people. Amerisleep has some brick and mortar stores where customers can try out the beds in person. But, they’ve embraced the online mattress shopping, and their mattresses arrive mattress-in-a-box style on your front doorstep.

Amerisleep also strives to reduce emissions and their carbon footprint by producing their mattresses in the United States. This company sells more than just mattresses. Amerisleep also has a line of foundations and bedding, including an adjustable bed.

Amerisleep builds on a base model to increase softness and conforming with each mattress.

  • Amerisleep AS1: Amerisleep’s base design is their only two-layer model. It’s also the shortest at ten inches. This firm mattress targets stomach and back sleepers.
  • Amerisleep AS2: The AS2 has an added transition layer, making the mattress’s total height 12 inches. It’s slightly softer than the AS1 with a medium-firm rating. Due to its firm feel and inclusion of HIVE® technology, this is Amerisleep’s best mattress for back pain.
  • Amerisleep AS3: Amerisleep’s most popular model has a thicker comfort layer than the AS2, giving it a medium feel. It has zoned pressure relief at the hips and shoulders, making this a great option for couples and all sleep styles.
  • Amerisleep AS4: This medium-soft mattress offers four inches of cushioning Bio-Pur®. A thicker comfort layer and thinner transition layer gives it a softer feel and more conformity than the AS3.
  • Amerisleep AS5: The softest of the Amerisleep models has an additional Active Flex layer that boosts its height to 14 inches. This layer maintains the responsiveness of the foam so you don’t get stuck in its deeply conforming layers. It’s also Amerisleep’s best mattress for heavy sleepers since it includes an extra layer for support.

Amerisleep Mattress Materials

The cover of the AS1 is a soft, breathable, and lightweight fabric that is designed to increase airflow. It is also removable and completely washable.

The AS1, Amerisleep’s firmest model, has two foam layers. The Bio-Pur® top layer consists of an advanced open-cell foam that promotes maximum airflow. An eight-inch, dense Bio-Core® foam support layer gives this mattress its firmness.

The AS2 also has a two-inch Bio-Pur® comfort layer. For added softness and breathability, it rests atop a three-inch Affinity layer with HIVE® technology (Harnessing Intelligent Ventilation & Energy). HIVE’s® hexagonal cutouts cushion pressure points while increasing airflow. The cutouts are further apart at the shoulders and hips for improved pressure relief. At the head, back, and feet, they’re more closely packed to provide extra support.

The AS3, Amerisleep’s most popular model, also has three foam layers. It’s a medium-firm mattress with the same HIVE® and Bio-Pur® technologies. However, the thickness of the top layer is swapped with the transition layer for a softer, medium-feel mattress.

The AS4’s three layers create 12 inches of medium-soft comfort. It has a thick Bio-Pur® top layer with an additional one-inch Affinity transition layer. A seven-inch Bio-Core® support layer brings stability to all that conforming foam.

Amerisleep’s only four-layer mattress is also its softest. It has Bio-Pur®, Bio-Core®, and Affinity layers like the other models, but also includes a two-inch Active Flex layer. This gives the mattress a great bounce back so you don’t sink too far into it.

Recently, Amerisleep has also started offering hybrid counterparts to three of their memory foam mattresses. What separates a hybrid from innerspring mattresses is the top foam layer that increases the bed’s pressure relief.

Amerisleep’s Cooling Technologies

Foam mattresses are known for trapping heat, but Amerisleep beats the norm. The combination of Bio-Pur®, Bio-Core®, and HIVE® technologies increase airflow and breathability, which gives the mattresses excellent temperature regulation. The top layer foams have that extreme open-cell structure that goes beyond normal memory foam in breathability.

That’s all fully complemented with the mattress cover. Overall, Amerisleep mattresses rank average to above average for temperature regulation and breathability.

Amerisleep’s Support, Conformability, and Motion Isolation

Amerisleep’s five models offer a range of support, conformability, and motion isolation. Their selection of firmness options lets you decide how much support and softness you need.

The softer AS4 and AS5 models, in particular, gently cradle body curves and relieve pressure points. Those who need more support with light conforming can find it in the AS1 and AS2 models. The thinner comfort layers put the body closer to the mattress’s core support layer, aligning the spine of heavyweight sleepers.

However, Amerisleep mattresses do not have good edge support. Like other foam models, they can make you feel like you’re falling out of bed if you get too close to the edge.

Amerisleep’s Durability and Longevity

Amerisleep’s high quality, eco-friendly materials, and solid manufacturing processes create highly durable mattresses. They’re backed by a 20-year, prorated warranty, which includes mattress replacement for indentations over ¾ of an inch. They generally have a life expectancy longer than the average eight to ten years.

Amerisleep’s Sleep Trial, Warranty, and Return Policies

Amerisleep has a 100-day sleep trial. They encourage people to try the mattress for 30 days before starting a return. They also help customers look for local charities to accept returned mattress donations.

If you choose to keep the mattress, it’s backed by an extended 20-year warranty that is broken into two parts. In the first ten years, defects in workmanship and structure are fully covered and are the mattress can be replaced. In the second ten years, those same issues will be refunded at 50 percent of the original purchase price. However, there is a detailed list as to what counts as a defect.

Included with the warranty is one of the best indentation policies on the market. These mattresses will be replaced if indentations greater than ¾ of an inch develop. The warranty includes limits to the warranty such as burns, tears, or stains. For the warranty to be valid, the mattress must be on a proper foundation. Amerisleep may require proof before a repair or refund is issued.

The warranty is only valid for the original owner with proof of purchase.

Amerisleep’s Social Responsibility

Amerisleep uses plant-based materials and eco-friendly packaging and shipping processes. This reduces the use of petroleum products. They also help customers donate returned mattresses to those in need.

Who Are Amerisleep Mattresses For?

Amerisleep focuses on a single mattress type— memory foam. By specializing in this material, they’ve developed a series of mattresses that work for sleepers of all weights and sleep styles.

For example, the AS1 works well for lightweight sleepers of all sleep styles while the AS5 caters to heavyweight sleepers of all sleep styles. The AS2, AS3, and AS4 have varying firmness levels and conformability that work for everyone in between. We like their AS3 as the best mattress because it offers an even balance of comfort and support, and is suitable for the majority of sleepers. You can walk into one of their brick and mortar stores and find a model to suit most people. It’s a matter of determining your preferred support level.

Saatva Mattresses

saatva mattressSaatva entered the luxury mattress world in 2010. Their mattresses meet high standards for eco-friendliness and human safety. Many of the mattresses have independent certifications that require extensive testing of emissions, manufacturing, and labor practices.

To complement their mattresses, they also carry bedding products, bed frames, and bases. Their mattresses can be used on adjustable beds, which are among their long line of sleep products. Their mattresses are shipped to your door but are not compressed or vacuum-sealed.

  • Saatva Classic: This hybrid innerspring mattress combines innersprings with memory foam. It comes in three comfort levels and includes a zoned support layer for the spine.
  • Loom & Leaf: Saatva’s foam mattress includes several layers of memory foam. A top layer of gel-infused memory foam provides some cooling. However, it’s strength is its ability to conform to the curves of the body.
  • Zenhaven: The Zenhaven is an all-natural latex mattress. It’s flippable, so there is a firm and soft side.
  • Saatva HD: The Saatva HD is designed for heavyweight sleepers. It’s a tall innerspring hybrid with zoned support for the spine.
  • The Solaire: Saatva’s most expensive model is an air mattress with 50 adjustable firmness settings. It includes a targeted five-zone spinal support system.

Saatva Mattress Materials

Saatva Classic

The Saatva Classic has an organic pillow top cover that’s padded with polyfoam. A bronze trim and antimicrobial treatment add to the luxury. Inside it has a coil on coil innerspring construction.

Beneath the cover is a zoned memory foam layer that’s only across the lumbar area for added spinal support. Next are pocketed coils covered in fabric. Pocketed coils are not interconnected, so they flex only at pressure points. Between the pocketed coils and the final layer of Bonnell-style (hourglass-shaped) coils is a wired lumbar support system to keep the spine aligned. This model comes in three support options: plush soft, luxury firm, firm.

Loom & Leaf

Saatva’s foam mattress comes in two firmnesses, relaxed firm and firm. A quilted cover with poly-foam paddings blends into a layer of gel-infused memory foam. The lumbar area has an extra layer of memory foam for added conforming. It rests atop a two-layered, dense polyfoam support core.

Zenhaven

Zenhaven is Saatva’s all-natural Talalay latex mattress. Covered in a quilted, organic cotton cover, this mattress is Saatva’s most eco-friendly model. A 100 percent wool layer acts as a natural flame retardant. The bed gets its conformity from a five-zoned latex comfort layer. The zones have different support based on the pressure relief needed in the shoulders, hips, and knees. It’s built atop a latex support core. This mattress is flippable with a firm and soft side.

Saatva HD

This hybrid is designed for heavyweight sleepers between 300 and 500 pounds. An organic pillow top cover padded with poly-foam covers a five-zone Talalay latex layer. Two layers of contouring memory foam cushion the body. The coils are offset and supported with high-density poly-foam columns.

The Solaire

This airbed has six layers:

  • An organic pillow top with poly-foam padding
  • A five-zoned Talalay latex comfort layer
  • A gel-infused memory foam transition layer
  • A moisture barrier
  • Vulcanized air chambers
  • Offset coils with poly-foam columns over a foam base

The air chambers allow you to choose one of 50 firmness levels for the ultimate in adjustable comfort. The moisture barrier protects the foam and latex layers from any condensation from the air chambers.

All of Saatva’s memory foams are CertiPUR-US® certified, which means they do not give off harmful emissions from substances like formaldehyde, PBDEs, and VOCs.

Saatva’s Temperature Regulation and Breathability

Saatva’s models vary in temperature regulation and breathability. Their hybrid models, the Saatva and Saatva HD, have excellent breathability. Air flows freely through the innersprings, making them cooler than memory or latex foams alone.

The Loom & Leaf has average breathability and slightly below average temperature regulation. The cooling gel-infused memory foam helps, but this model is known for being warm.

The Zenhaven’s latex foam is average for breathability and temperature regulation. It’s designed with air pockets to improve breathability, but it doesn’t meet the same standards as Saatva’s innerspring hybrids or Amerisleeps’ models.

The Solaire has excellent breathability and temperature regulation. The layers of coils and air chambers allow good airflow through all the foam layers.

Saatva’s Support, Conformability, and Motion Isolation

Saatva Classic

The Saatva Classic has average conforming with poor motion isolation; however, it’s got reinforced edge support. The Saatva HD, on the other hand, with its extra foam layers, has the motion isolation and conformity of foam with support that’s meant heavyweight sleepers. Lightweight sleepers, especially side sleepers, will probably find both of these models too firm with a lack of conformability.

The Loom & Leaf’s greatest strength is its conforming ability. Side sleepers love this mattress. However, it may have too much contouring for stomach sleepers of any size.

The Zenhaven has excellent conformity and motion isolation. Its foams excel at relieving pressure and absorbing motion. However, it lacks edge support. If you get too close to the edge, you may feel like you’re sliding off. The Zenhaven works for sleepers of all weights and sleep styles, but back sleepers seem to enjoy it the most.

The Solaire has average conforming and excellent motion isolation. With good edge support and adjustable overall support, it works for sleepers of all weights and sleep styles.

Saatva’s Durability and Longevity

The Saatva doesn’t have the durability of the other four Saatva models. Despite excellent quality materials, it tends to break down faster than average. The Saatva HD, Loom & Leaf, Zenhaven, and The Solaire have average durability. They all fall under the same warranty. They have varying warranty lengths, though what’s covered in the warranties is generally the same. The indentation policy does vary from model to model.

Saatva’s Sleep Trial, Warranty, and Return Policies

Saatva offers a 120-day sleep trial period. The mattress can be returned and refunded within that period. However, you have to pay a $99 transportation fee.

The terms of the warranty vary for each model in Saatva’s line up. The Saatva and Loom & Leaf have a 15-year, multi-tier warranty. The Saatva HD and Zenhaven have a 20-year warranty. The Solaire has the longest warranty at 25 years.

All Saatva mattress warranties are multi-tiered. In the first two years, Saatva will replace mattresses deemed defective. In all remaining years, Saatva will repair or recover the mattress, charging a $99 transportation fee each way. If you choose to replace the mattress instead of having it repaired, you keep the old mattress and have the option of buying a new one for a percentage of the original mattress price. The percentage you pay depends on how long you’ve owned the mattress.

Indentations are covered under warranty, but depending on the model, the coverage will range between 3/4 to 1 inch, depending on the model.

All mattresses must be used with a proper foundation for full warranty coverage. Only original owners with proof of purchase can make warranty claims.

Saatva’s Social Responsibility

Saatva’s memory foams are CertiPUR-US® certified, which means they’ve been tested for harmful emissions beyond legal standards. Their latex foam is all-natural, and they use organic cotton in their covers.

Who Are Saatva Mattresses For?

All of Saatva’s models are luxurious, but who they appeal to is more limited than Amerisleep. They’re one of the few manufacturers with a model for the heaviest of sleepers with the Saatva HD.

The Zenhaven stands out among latex mattresses in conformability and appeals to sleepers of all weights and sleep styles. The Solaire tops the list for comfort and wide appeal. It can work for almost anyone, but it’s quite a financial investment ($2,695 for a queen).

Amerisleep vs. Saatva: The Bottom Line

  • Saatva offers a wide model selection with several types of mattresses.
  • Amerisleep specializes in foam mattresses.
  • Amerisleep’s 20-year, two-tier warranty is easier to understand and follow.
  • Saatva has a longer sleep trial.
  • Saatva has eco-friendly, independently tested and certified memory and polyfoams.
  • Amerisleep’s foams are plant-based. They also have eco-friendly manufacturing and shipping.

No matter if you choose a foam or hybrid mattress, your goal is a comfortable night’s sleep. What that means will be different for everyone. But a good comparison can give you an idea of where to start your search.
