Hollywood Dreams: See How Your Favorite Celebs Sleep

Celebrities are often depicted as glamorous super humans that don’t have to do the mundane things the rest of us must, such as sleep. Alas, for those celebs that remain mortal, sleep is still a necessity. The rich and famous, however, often have the liberty to deck out fancy bedroom suites or to maintain eccentric routines that the rest of us cannot. But, we did some digging to see how celebrities sleep and found out that sleeping like a star isn’t all that hard.

So, You Want to Sleep Like a Celebrity?

Whether you want to fake it til you make it or simply add a little glamor to your life, there are a few tips that may be worth borrowing from the famous when it comes to sleep. From catching extra Zzz’s to creating inviting decor, these are the top celebrity sleep trends:

1) Get Plenty of Beauty Sleep

According to Health.com, Jennifer Lopez swears by 8 hours of sleep a night, and fellow diva Mariah Carey claims sleeping up to 15 hours per day as essential for her looks and vocal cords. Many new celeb moms also hire “sleep nurses” to take care of their infants so they can ensure a good nights’ rest. For the rest of us, following healthy sleep hygiene tips and and asking relatives to help out with young ones can help carve out time for much-needed rest, which is essential for physical and mental health.

2) Or Don’t Sleep at All

 Many celebrities confess (or brag) about running on a couple hours of sleep per day due to busy schedules and cross-country commutes. Brad Pitt, Eminem, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and George Clooney are just a few celebs who have reported running on little sleep or having sleep issues like insomnia. Others like Martha Stewart and Donald Trump are known workaholics, constantly building their empires with the mantra that sleep is for suckers.  While we don’t recommend it, many super-human celebrities manage to get so much done by skimping on sleep – but they often suffer the consequences of exhaustion and have problems with insomnia or sleeping pills as well. For example, Heath Ledger, Michael Jackson, Jimi Hendrix and Marilyn Monroe were all reported to have issues with sleeping pills possibly contributing to their untimely demises.

3) Splurge on an Awesome Mattress

 Celebs, literally, like to sleep in the lap in of luxury, which means splurging on the mattresses that represent the best of the best. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West recently dropped nearly $1 million on beds and mattresses for their new home. The Royal State Beds were a limited production (60 total) by London mattress maker Savoir Beds to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee. Each one is made by hand with cashmere, lamb’s wool, horsehair and star-lashed springs, designed to resemble 17th and 18th century royal beds. The linens, frames and canopies feature pure silk, with a price tag of $190,000 each. Other celebs who own the pricey Savoir beds include Oprah, Madonna and Elton John. However, the actual queen sleeps on a Hypnos mattress, the official Royal supplier, which charges $8000 and up for its beds. But pricey mattresses aren’t just for London; the handmade Hastens Vividus (a spring mattress with wool, horsehair and cotton) costs around $65,000, and is rumored to be owned by both Tom Cruise and Angelina Jolie. Kluft is another pricey hand-made mattress brand (ranging for a couple thousand to $30,000 plus), with owners including Demi Moore and George Clooney. Fortunately, there are several well-rated mattresses that can provide good sleep for the rest of us, and cost less.

4) Go Ultra-Modern

Several celebrity bedrooms are the epitome of modern design, with simple, clean lines and textures like hardwood and metal. Jennifer Aniston’s room features a bold but simple wood platform bed with simple colors (ivory, red and browns). The opulent fabrics and oversized lamps add a luxurious feel that can be replicated in any home. Nicki Hilton’s bedroom takes a simple black-and-white color scheme up a notch with dramatic black drapes, patent leather furniture, and intricate pendant lamps. John Mayer’s Armani-designed bedroom features a masculine dark gray scheme with pops of gold. The simple platform bed, oversized mirror, and vintage trunk are all very accessible styles perfect for a modern bachelor pad. For those who like simpler schemes, Will Ferrell’s modern bedroom is also decked out in muted shades of gray with elegant black leather accents.

6) Or Go Ultra-Glam

Other celebs eschew modern styles for full-on Hollywood glamour, replete with luxe fabrics, oversized furniture, and plenty of mirrors and art. Cher and Will & Jada Pinkett-Smith both have Moroccan-themed bedrooms that ooze luxury. The intricate lanterns, fabrics and pillows in rich colors can help transform a boring bedroom into a celeb-worthy retreat. Canopy beds are another very popular celebrity trend, as seen in the Elle Decor slideshow and other celeb websites, appearing in bedrooms of Suzanne Somers, Will & Jada, Christina Aguilera, Jane Fonda, and Sharon & Ozzy Osbourne. The old-school romance and regality of canopy beds can add a dramatic flair to your space, and the draped fabrics help block out sleep-stealing lights.

4) Add a Vintage Touch

Vintage has been a hot trend for awhile, and fortunately this is one of the more accessible celebrity decor trends. Many ultra-rich stars procure vintage finds for their bedrooms, such as chairs, tables, lamps or paintings. While the rich and famous likely have personal shoppers doing the dirty work, scanning your local thrift stores, vintage shops, garage sales and online marketplaces can yield unique, celeb-worthy finds for your room. Be creative – remember chairs can be reupholstered and furniture can often be re-painted to fit your home at a fraction of new prices. 7) Have Separate Bedrooms

Celebrities often have the benefit of spacious houses that allow for several bedrooms, and many celeb couples take advantage of the space and maintain separate sleeping quarters. Some do it to avoid snorers or co-sleeping kids, others just prefer their privacy. According to the Huffington Post, the list of couples who sleep apart (or once did) includes Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter, Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick, Ryan O’Neal and Farrah Fawcett, Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, and Kevin Jonas and Danielle Deleasa.

Celebrities’ luxurious lifestyles often spark envy, and one has to wonder what it would be like to sleep on a $200,000 bed or have the liberty of enjoying 15 hours every night for beauty rest. While some celebrity sleep habits simply don’t translate to the real world, it can be interesting to see how the other side lives, and we can all carve out a little more time to ensure we get enough rest and wake feeling like a million. Celebrity decor also provides heaps of inspiration for home design, and many of the unique ideas can be implemented on a budget as well. When it comes to your bedroom, take a cue from the stars and make it a retreat you are happy to retire to every night – just avoid bad celebrity sleep habits like working (or partying) to exhaustion.
